Here is Shrink O’Matic, my new AIR application!
Simply drag and drop images on it and they’ll be resized as you wish.
More info on the project page…
I’ve also set up a new projects‘ page listing AIR apps and more.
Concerning the source code, it’s not available but you can find parts of it in a brand new Google Code project where I’ve added (and I’ll keep on adding) classes I use.
Thanks for app. I was using ACDSee for ages for batch resizing. Now Shrink O’ Matic is my favourite. Saved the day ;)
I love the tool!
The only ‘option’ I miss (to ditch Photoshop for easy resizing etc) is a de-interlace option.
I work a lot with video, which leaves me with interlaced jpg-files.
Hello,
For some reason, the drag and drop ability in Shrink O’Matic has disappeared. I am running the most recent version of SOM, v0.2.5, the current version of the AIR runtime, and Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Has Snow Leopard broken this function? I use SOM all the time, and I’m pretty bummed out that this is broken.
I will investigate on that and keep you informed…
Thanks for sending this.
A question, however: what kind of files were you trying to drop?
Quentin,
I was dropping 4288 × 2848 3.8MB jpeg’s. I’ve shrunk them before, that’s why I’m puzzled. I’ve dropped some other sizes and, SOM won’t even accept those.
OK, I can’t test it myself but I will ask friends and see if I can debug that…
Man, you’re absolutely right…
I don’t know if I can fix that but I will try to hunt that bug down!
Happily you still can use the Browse button.
I had shrink-o-matic installed on my Mac and LOVED it.
Then I went for the upgrade and now it does not work. Pictures bounced right back.
Found a comment you made to someone else with a link to download the latest.
Now my photos go in, GO appears, nothing happens.
I would like my original app back.
Thanks
Sorry about that but don’t worry, every version is still available at the project’s page…
I have no Mac so this is hard for me to debug, folks!
Awesome app! One thing I would love to see though is a counter telling you how many files are being shrunk and how many are still left to go!
Great work man!
Sounds like a good idea, I will try to implement it in the next version!
Just to note that I too had the OSX drag and drop issue running the same setup as @Strubbles. Downgraded to 0.2.4 and it’s working again. Thanks for a really handy app, hope you figure out the issue!
OK, so if 0.2.4 works correctly I guess this is the experimental feature introduced with 0.2.5 that wreaked havoc…
I’ve asked the question on the LiveDocs (thinking this could be a Snow Leopard+AIR bug) but will try to disable that “browser drag’n drop” thing on Macs, to see if it helps!
I’ll keep you guys informed, thanks for the feedback.
Hey Quentin!
Noticed that the image counter has been added in the new version (v0.2.6). Awesome! :)
Absolutely!
You even get some link love in the Version History on the project’s page… Thanks for submitting the idea!
Hi Quentin,
Well done with this tool, it does the job easily, great user interface and funky design! As a previous poster said, this is great for website design clients who want to update their own website without shelling out for a photoshop licence. Nice and simple, add a crop feature and thats all thats needed to optimize jpgs. I have recommended shrink-o-matic on my website design blog at http://www.clickwebdesign.com.au/website-design-blog/optimize-images-for-fast-downloads.html
The only thing missing in this program is the ability to add watermarks.
Got me some link lovin’…yeah! :)
This is super handy. Any way to implement some manual renaming functionality? For instance, I might want the small versions of all images named IMG_0000.JPG to be sIMG_0000.JPG. Maybe if we could just do a manual filename model in a file like s$origname$.JPG or something more elegant. :) Macros would be nice too because when I want to put a set of photos up manually I usually want two versions, the small version is constrained to a width of 442 and the large version is constrained to a width of 1024×1024. So, if I could dump my photos in and get those two versions named s$origname$.JPG and l$origname$.JPG, that would be prime!
All the same, even if these features never make it in, I’ll still be using it! Thanks for the efforts.
Quentin,
Nice job….exactly what a lot of our clients need. We’d like to include a link from our site to your download, or possibly include the link in our app. Shoot me an email so we can do this right.
Wayne
Amazing!!! Thank you for the sharing.
This app has saved my life a bunch of times now – Clients love it.
Great tool for fast image resizing. The only thing that stops me using it all the time is that it doesn’t copy EXIF data. If it did that, it’d be almost perfect. :)
This is the most magnificent, amazing and powerful than ever saw for Adobe Air. I love it!
Great program thanks! Alot of monitors and most TV’s are now wide screen I can not seem to get SOM to output a wide screen res?
I don’t really understand what you mean when you say “widescreen”! Can you send me an image that doesn’t work, so I can check?
Not sure how to send a sample from the blog but widescreen is 16:9 I set SOM to 1024×640 whick is 16:9 and the program then makes it 853×640 which is 4:3 and any other 16:9 res I use gets changed also hope this helps
I get the similar result that Crash does.. I set it at 1024×640 and I get a 960×640 output..
I’m guessing the widescreen image isn’t really that wide. Anamorphic issues, strethed pixel widths to blame. Check the “Pixel Aspect Ratio” of the original image in Photoshop. It will likely not be 1:1. More likely 1:1.46 or something. So your original is 4:3, displaying stratched for widescreen as per the ratio… My guess anyway.
How can I rename images with different names?
In SOM there are only 2 options: “auto-rename” and “keep original name”. If you’re looking for a robust file renamer I’d recommend Ant Renamer.
I use this ALL the time. When Google added page load time as part of their search algorithm, I had someone suggest that I should re-size my pictures before uploading them to my blog, rather than using the plugin re-sizing tool. They were right…my pages load faster and you’ve made it easy!
Thanks for writing this program! I have been imagining something just like this for a long time. I’m very pleased that you did the work for me. I will tell my friends.
Hey Quentin, I’ve been using your app for a while now and today I noticed that you can’t queue files from different batches.
For example, I selected a few files to process and then went into a sub-folder folder to select more files and dragged them into the app but the conversion process then stops the first conversion and starts the second.
How about adding a queue so you can keep adding files and it will process them in order. Both sets of files were also being sent to the same output folder.
Cheers! Heinrich
Great idea! I’ll give it a shot when I get back home.
So! I think I won’t be able to do so!
In fact, during the shrinking process the app is too busy manipulating the files and thus isn’t able to catch any event, such as receiving more files.
If I find a way to do it I will because that’s a great feature, but for now I’m stuck… Sorry!
Hi,
This app looks great! Easy enough for my extended family to use, and have them stop coming to me everytime something needs to be resized.
I do have a question though, is there an option to resize the image into a specific file size while keeping the aspect ratio? For example, I’d like to resize something 1000×1000 to 640×480 with 1:1 aspect ratio and inserting borders.
take care
Hi Roger, and thanks for the kind words!
If your image is 1000×1000 it cannot be 640×480 with the same ratio. Or is that why you talk about borders? Unfortunately SO’M doesn’t handle borders, so I’m afraid it’s not the right tool for your needs, sorry!
Love Shrink-o-Matic, it’s a default install tool for me – I have one suggestion though;
It would be nice if you could specify the output extension (or prefix) – sometimes I just want to add “-small” to a filename, not the width.
Nice suggestion! Will try to do this!
Shrink O’Matic has just been re-written from scratch! More details on its new blog post.
Hi, I love this application!!. I would like to use inside of a Linux server, is there some way to use with a command line in order to proccess the pics with it, to send them to the server after?
Nope! The app’s features cannot be invoked from the command line, sorry.
I’m running 2.3, and the custom name with number of digits is not working all the sudden. It is not adding the sequence digits.
I tried uninstalling, but the settings for Shrink are left, so when I reinstall shrink, it remembers my settings. I’m guessing that the problem might be in the settings. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Todd
Oh yeah?
I’ve tried and it works OK.
Can you send me a screen capture of your settings?
Thanks!
Sorry, total id10t (or if you prefer RTFM) problem on my part. I was not using the token $num.
Thanks for a Great program. It definitely helps with the Google page insights.
Todd
Yay, cool!
For some reason, the drag and drop ability in Shrink O’Matic has suddenly disappeared. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled. Computer off/then started again. Done this about 3 times. Thanks for your help.
Hi Lynda, can you tell me on which OS (name and version) you are using the app?
