Here is Shrink O'Matic, my new AIR application!
Simply drag and drop images on it and they'll be resized as you wish.
More info on the project page...
I've also set up a new projects' page listing AIR apps and more.
Concerning the source code, it's not available but you can find parts of it in a brand new Google Code project where I've added (and I'll keep on adding) classes I use.

I really love all your design work (your blog and the app) !
I’ve tried your app… i’ve just one remark : the thumbnails aren’t smooth.
anyway, this is a good and pretty work !
Thanks!
I’ll have a look into that…
Available via the AIR Marketplace, yep.
This will be very useful for our clients who don’t have Photoshop, or the skills/time to use Photoshop to resize images before uploading to their websites.
Great job!
M.
Hi, nice app:
1) it is not allways desirable to have image enlarged to target size, sometimes you just need to make very big just smaller.
2) CMYK JPEG is not converted correctly
It would be great if these issues were fixed in future releases.
Thanks.
1. True, but Shrink O’Matic doesn’t allow you to enlarge a pic, just to shrink it.
2. Can you send me an example image?
I’ll try and fix this!
Added to the Softpedia software database…
I never asked for this, it seems like they fill their own database.
Is there a limit to the original image size? Works fine on a 2048×1536 jpeg but does nothing to a 3264×2448 jpeg
Yep, AIR has a limitation with large images, the maximum dimension (width and/or height) is 2880px…
Sorry about that!
Hi, I installed Adobe AIR and then a few apps including this one and I can not get it to work at all.
I am on a MAC using leopard and neither drag and drop or by using the browse functions do anything at all?
Any ideas ?
Did you install AIR 1.0 (latest version)?
Do the other apps work?
yes, I have 1.0.1 installed.
I have tried a few apps including Agile Agenda, Ebay Desktop, Practical Desktiop and they all work fine.
Do these apps (those that run fine) involve opening or drag/dropping files?
I’ll ask my Leopard friends to have a look into this…
Hi, I trie to install shrink-o-matic in linux (air beta release). The inclusion of an ‘ in the path _really_ messes the installation up. If you really want your app to be “write once run enywhare” you might want to remove the ‘ from the name.
Cheers,
Emme
yes, I can save, close and open files with applications that let me do that.
could it be a leopard issue??
@FRoSTY: Probably… I’ll keep you informed.
@Emme: There should be no apostrophe in the app’s path! Does it work when renamed?
The application get installed to /opt/ so if there is an apostrophe in appname you get one in the path and there is no way to chose a different installation directory. To cleanly remove shrink-o-matic I had to change the name everywhere in the config scripts and in symlink “/opt/Shrink-O-Matic” to “opt/Shrink O’Matic”. So yes, I guess that changing the name should work.
Bye,
Emme
The app name does have an apostrophe, but the path shouldn’t…
I’ll check my air-config.xml file.
Thanks for this feedback, anyways!
@FRoSTY: Well, no bug on my buddies’ Leopard…
Do you see the “Drop pics here” text disappear when dropping files?
Updated to 0.1.1, minor changes including Emme’s suggestion.
Ran this once and it worked great on a handful of pics. Then I tried it on a second batch and it won’t allow me to drop the files in the window. Even browsing doesn’t work. I tried closing it and re-opening, hoping it go back to normal, but no luck.
Latest version of AIR, on XP Pro SP3

Hi,
Your program works and looks great, but the problem is that I can’t uninstall it on ubuntu.
Not that I want to get rid of it, but it gives me the install error every time when I try to install or remove a package, and it’s pretty annoying.
The error I’m getting when removing it with synaptic is:
E: net.tw.air.shrinkomatic.7c34f9ba9fad6689faabbe85f1f5b46ba5a32de5.1: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
Thanks in advance,
Eli.
@Aaron: Did you do something special between your first and your second use? Like installing SP3 or else?
@Eli: I’m afraid I can’t help you, AIR apps are built in an obscure way that can’t really be tweaked. You should probably report this bug to the Adobe AIR team… Sorry about that.
Hi, just to let you know when file extensions are in uppercase (like in lightbox workflow) then you can’t use this program
OK, I’ll fix that soon. Thanks!
Support for Bitmap files would be really useful – quite a lot of my games still use Bitmap as their screenshot format, and I was wanting to use SOM to automatically convert them to JPEGs for uploading to Photobucket.
Unfortunately, Adobe AIR (which is the tool I used to build SO’M) cannot handle BMP files… Sorry.
Really love the tool but need it to be able to handle larger image sizes. I am using a dSLR that takes pictures with images sizes of 3872 x 2592. If you could make it handle that then it would be an invaluable tool to my daily workflow.
Sorry but that’s another AIR (well, Flash Player) limitation, images cannot be more than 2880 pixels high or wide.
Hi,
I posted here before about a problem I had with uninstalling shrinkomatic in ubuntu, and you told me that I should contact adobe to report the bug.
However, I found something that might be your code, although I’m not sure about it, because I don’t know much about it.
The more refined error message I’m getting is:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/net.tw.air.shrinkomatic.7c34f9ba9fad6689faabbe85f1f5b46ba5a32de5.1.postinst: 42: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string
It seems that on line 42 of postinst, there’s something wrong with the quotes, but since I don’t know much about programming, I wouldn’t know what.
The lines are as follows:
*)
echo “postinst called with unknown argument \`$1′” >&2
exit 0
;;
esac
According to me, it seems that the quotes are not properly closed after $1, can you tell me how to close them properly so my problem can be solved?
Nope!
You won’t be able to hack this…
This code is not something I typed but was generated by AIR. I really can’t do anything with it but I think Adobe can! Anyways, thanks for sending this in.
Okay, I posted the problem to adobe, will see if they can help me out.
Thanks for the quick reaction and the help. :-)
Hai! I love this app and use it alot on my work on my windows xp machine. However at home I run Vista and have had it freeze up on my 100% of the time.
Dragging images does nothing (they wont be recognized or acknowledged) and using the ‘browse’ button will add them however it will freeze up at the ‘Go’ sequence.
Please help.
I was attempting to review this product for my website and it will not work for me in Windows Vista Business.
@MikeonTV + @nizzy1115: It seems like we have troubles with Vista! I’m running on XP so I’ll have to ask friends to help me debug it…
I’ll keep you informed about bug fixes and updates. Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks. I look forward to keeping this service and not being tempted to look elsewhere.
Great app. Thanks for your hard work.
I have one feature request that would help me immensely. Would it be possible to add a watermarking feature?
Select a watermarking file (preferably one that supports transparency), and then choose where it gets placed in relation to one of the corners.
Thanks again!
@Chris Johnson: Well, that’s technically possible but I’m not sure I have enough free time…
I add this to my Post-Its!
Thanks for the feedback.
Nice site!
Thanks for the kind words. I’m actually thinking about scrapping it… why is it that I’m never satisfied when I’m designing for myself?
I just got back from the laundromat (no joke) where I had some time to update the app.
Go check the last version on the project’s page!
Can you confirm if this update fixes Shirnk O Matic for Vista?
Well no, I can’t confirm that as none on my friends on Vista had trouble with previous releases!
Could you share your experience with this last update?
Maybe switching to the 1.1 version of AIR has fixed your issues… Let us know!
It is working now on Vista Quent. Thanks for whatever you did. @nizzy1115 you can write that review now.
I second the watermark option btw!
Woot!
Well, I’m trying to install the program, but always get an error during download. Is there something I can do to fix this problem?
When downloading the .air file?
Or when updating via the already installed app?
If the install badge on the project page doesn’t work wel for you, you still can use the direct links (for example: here’s the last version).
By the way, do you have AIR installed?
Just what I need!! Thanks
Excellent app … the only change I would request is to bump up the size limit if that is ever possible. Irregardless, it is a great design, and it’s the first app I’ve come across that I can universally get my clients to understand and use when resizing images to upload to their websites.
Great work.
Hi.Thnx for this great app.I got a problem. After i update the app to 0.2 version, i cant convert more then 1 picture.i choose more than one jpg and it only resize one of them.I hope u can help with it..Thnx again
Great app by the way. Love it. Would it be possible to add a “save for the web” option in a future version? I’d love to drop an image, resize it, and have it come out web-ready. Thanks for a very useful application!!
@M.Adams: Bumping that limit is not possible yet, we all have to wait for the Flash Player 10 release!
@Bilal: Absolutely true, big bug here! I’ll fix this as soon as possible… Sorry about that.
@John Carnes: What do you mean by “Web ready”? Could you tell me more about that?
An update will drop soon with Bilal’s bug fix and an enhanced shrink algorithm.
See ya!
re: @John Carnes: What do you mean by “Web ready”? Could you tell me more about that?
“Web ready” is the final step in getting an image ready for inclusion in a web site or being posted on the web. It “dumbs down” the picture to a smaller file size (usually in the 15-50K range) so it will load quickly with web pages. Photoshop will do this for you either through a menu command (save for the web) or through hot keys (ctrl+alt+shift+S) and give you options for how good or bad you want the quality to be. I usually find that 30% works well and the file size is small enough that it loads quickly.
Thanks for considering this enhancement.
Update posted (0.2.1)! See project page for details.
@John Carnes: you can choose JPG as the output format and select a 30% quality, just like in Photoshop (well, simpler)… Were you thinking of other options?
re: @John Carnes: you can choose JPG as the output format and select a 30% quality, just like in Photoshop (well, simpler)… Were you thinking of other options?
Well, silly me. Never even saw the JPG quality setting. I’ve been using the “same as original” setting. I just tried it and it’s PERFECT!! Also picked up the new update. Thanks for opening my eyes. :)
Quentin..Thnx a lot for quick update..It work fine..C’ya..
Can you get around the current max resolutions? Pictures from my Canon 20D don’t shrink. It just says “Go!” with no output.
@Observer: Not yet, sorry…
I’m an employee at a fairly-large newspaper, and I’ve installed Shrink-O-Matic on our editors’ machines. It’s a great way for them to easily resize an image when they post the stories on our website. However, we’d love to see a feature that would allow you to specify the resolution of the images. Right off the camera, they’re around 200 dpi. It’d be great if Shrink-o-Matic had an option to save as 72 dpi (standard web resolution). Would this be possible for a future update?
Hi!
I have created a guide on how to easily shrink your images for free. The guide is in English or Norwegian.
Take a look if you please,
http://www.yourinfocentral.com/imageshrinking/
Doesn’t support .bmp files. That’s a bit disappointing.
Your AIR application has been indexed by The AIR Bay (http://www.theairbay.com). Feel free to drop by to update any of the application’s information or wheneevr you release a new version. The AIR Bay is still under development so your feedback is also appreciated.
I just went and checked out Google Code but couldn’t see anything related to this project. I was wondering if you are still planning to release the source or if you could share how you went about doing the image resize?
Thanks
Chris
Hi,
I’m really impressed with your app! I would like to know how you managed to get such good quality reductions? When I try resizing an image from 2800×2800 to 400×400 using AS3 the lines appear jagged, however with your application they are nice, smooth and anti-aliased! Very impressive!
Can you provide some help? Or just point me in the right direction for creating anti-aliased images?
Cheers,
Mark
@Chris: everything you’ll find here is used in this app. The entire source code is not planned to be released as open source, though.
@Mark: The smoothing algorithm was found here (French), you gotta applause this envrac guy!
LOVE IT! I used the xp powertoy to resize and vista does not have one…this fixes my need to re size!
Hi, great app! I found this one interresting because at work we’ve tried something similar. Do you think it’s possible to drag files straight out of a browserwindow into an Air app? I can’t get it to work, and my best guess is it’s not supported due to safety issues. Any thoughts on this one?
Well no, you can’t do that, probably because your operating system won’t consider what you’re dragging is an image…
What I suggest is a 2 step process:
1. Drag and drop the image out of your browser to the desktop
2. Drag and drop the image from your desktop to SO’M
That should be fine!
mmm but I can drag image files into a swf file and let it read it’s content. So I thought it was not just supported by Air. There must be some way to do it. For me, first dragging to desktop is not an option, it kills the concept of my program ;-) Thanks for your reply.
Drag images to a SWF? Are you sure? Can you explain how you do that?
Yes, my 2 step solution wouldn’t be cool for your software…
Hello! I’m using the Linus beta in which the install-badge isn’t working. I finally found the direct link in the blog here. Could you consider making the direct links more obvious on the project page in case a user gets an error?
Thanks, i’m going to go play now with the app! Also as an avid Ubuntu user i hadn’t realized that Air was in the repositories already.
I underlined the links, I hope that’s enough!
If you’ve got feedback for SO’M on Ubuntu, please share…
Shrink-o-Matic is great. Thank you! One problem. Sometimes it just stops working. Drop an image and it just says “Go!” with no file name info displayed. Close/re-open app does not do anything. Rebooting fixes problem. Is it just me?
Actually their is a problem with too large images, but I think rebooting would not change a thing…
How big were your bitmaps?
Images are 6MP 3466×2304. Rebooting does fix problem. Just seems after I open/use/close the program a few times, it stops working.
Images with at least a dimension over 2880 should not work…
What is weird is that your pics seem to be working!
Sorry, I don’t know how to help!
Are there plans to ever increase the dimension threshold? This would be an extremely useful app for what I do, but I deal with original photos at over 3000 px wide, but need to be able to quickly thumbnail them. This is an awesome app if it could handle the larger sizes. I tried several of our large images, but it didn’t work on any of them.
Yes, sorry about that…
The dimension threshold is a Flash/AIR limitation, AIR 1.5 and Flash Player 10 will increase the limits.
More techy stuff here!
There are hacks to bypass these limits, I might have a look into them when I have some time.
Doesn´t work… when I drop an image it just says “Go!”, nothing more happens.
Guess it´s due to the size limits, maybe you should mention that limitation somewhere on the page where you download the app. So others like me won´t waste their time…
Well, it’s written under the “Limitations” section!
But, anyways, I should alert the user when dropping too large files…
I tried to shrink some image files and most worked but some failed.
I found the image files that failed came from the following 2 digital cameras: Pentax *ist DL and Casio EX-S880.
Do you know why the program can not process the images from these two digital cameras??
Do these images have height or width above 2880 pixels?
If so, it’s a known limitation. If not please e-mail me one one them so I can have a look (my e-mail address is at the bottom of the page: the contact link)!
hi, nice appz. my pictures are larger/ over limitations. what program should i use to do my shrinking… i like the easy and fast way pf doing it, perfect 4 parents… if it works.
regards FA
The next version of AIR (1.5) will be released soon (probably next week). The dimensions limitation will change, allowing much bigger images to be handled…
I will post an update as soon as AIR 1.5 is live!
I read some of the tech reports from above link “techy stuff here” but it was talking about the difference between Flash 8/9 and Flash 10. I do have Flash 10 and it still has the limitation. Therefore, I hope AIR 1.5 will help this limitation problem.
Thanks for the update!!!
The AIR runtime includes its own Flash Player (AIR 1.1 has FP9 in it), so even if you have FP10 installed on your computer it won’t change a thing…
But AIR 1.5 will have FP10 embedded!
It would be nice if the program shows the message telling users the limitation has been met instead of just simply shows “Go” without details.
Just my 2 cents.
Have you looked at http://www.psyked.co.uk/imagesizer-air-application ?
I downloaded AIR 1.5 and uninstalled AIR 1.1 and installed AIR 1.5 but it still does shrink images larger than 2880 pixels……..
True.
I’d have to update/recompile the app…
Expect it to happen in the days to come.
Is it still on the way?
Ouch, I almost forgot!
Thanks for waking me up on this…
Well, I won’t deliver it for Christmas, but probably before January 5th!
No problem.
Happy Holidays!
What an aswesome ap!! Thank you! No doubt I will send over a donation. I have a suggestion and a minor bug report: First the bug, I was testing the ap and found that after I shrunk an image to a jpg output directory and subsequently deleted the output image to try again… I get the go! error on the second try even though windows reported the destination directory to be empty. Closing the ap and reopening clears what ever is blocking the second attempt and the error. Im using Vista 64. Now the suggested feature, not sure how hard this would be to code… for jpg output give the user an option to shrink file below nnnn size and have the ap adjust the jpg quality to try to meet that criteria.
This has been a very important time saving ap for me, thank you again!
I will update the app soon so I’ll have an opportunity to look into this bug and hopefully fix it!
I’ll also try to find a simple way to do what you suggest but I’m not sure JPG’s allow such predictions… We’ll see!
No worries, thanks for the quick response. I am already very happy with the ap… I sent over a little appreciation via paypal. Cheers.
Updated, go get it!
Thanks a lot for the update!
Hi, I’m writing an app to do live blogging and I’d really like to be able to shrink images taken with a digital camera for use in the app, especially as thumbnails. I can’t seem to find any help to do this. Could you let me know how you went about doing it with your app?
Thanks!
This is a sweet app! just one-question: is there any way to convert a png with alpha? whenever i do this it adds white where it should be transparent.
very nice software. Thank you.
how to make it detect JPG file, instead of jpg ?
I don’t really understand… You can shrink files with a JPG extension, if that’s what you’re looking for (make sure you’ve got the latest version). If not, please tell me more!
Hi – really cool piece of software. I have a enhancement suggestion for the output folder feature: would it be feasible to include an ftp client/function to upload the shrunk images to a web server?
Thanks for the feedback!
I’m sure it’s possible but I don’t really have time for that, I can only suggest you use NetDrive (or else) for this kind of needs!
It’d be nice if you could add some rename functionality. Like add _thumb (or whatever we choose) to the original name. Or possibly rename the whole thing based on the count.
Great app! However, it would be nice to have the option to only shrink images, only enlarge images, or shrink/enlarge images.
Since it’s called Shrink O’Matic it only shrinks images… And I don’t plan providing the ability to enlarge them, sorry!
Would it be possible to have an option for selecting PNG8/PNG32 (similar to the quality slider for JPG, but just two simple radio buttons). I don’t mind which one is the default (probably PNG32 for most folks), but saving files in the maximum settings for PNG8 (256 colors, alpha transparancy) is still a huge file size difference compared to PNG32, especially for simple web images.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Great tool thanks!
@Jean-Paul: Sorry by the tool I’m using to encode to PNG (PNGEncoder) doesn’t allow such options…
Thanks Quentin. That’s really too bad. Is there a possibility to use a different encoder or are you stuck on using PNGencoder? (since it’s for AS3).
Nah, I’m stuck with it…
Or do you know another AS3 class to manage PNG encoding?
I found this one: http://www.aswing.org/?page_id=163 (http://www.google.com/search?q=as3+png+8+encoder). Looks like a viable option?
Yes, but it seems a little bit slow and out-dated…
Love your tool. I’m planning to get my wife up to speed with it so she can easily resize digital photos for emailing. Actually, I have lots of non-techno-savvy relatives who NEED to install this program! A couple of things I don’t think have been mentioned yet…
1. Upscaling: I have found that small images will be upscaled. Not sure if this is intentional, but I’d like an option to turn this off (and just copy the original to the out-folder – perhaps).
2. Rotation: I know there’s no image preview. But it would be really cool if this was enabled (or an option) so that each image could be previewed before processing. Why? So you can enable a rotate option of course! A “90 degree CW” button and a “Go” button would suffice. If you dropped a whole swag of images on, maybe they could just display one at a time. “Go” (or Enter key) to process without rotation. Again, checking a “review each image” box in your settings could enable or disable this manual processing option.
Good work though. Love it. Really tidy. Thanks so much!
Upscaling is a bug, I’ll have a look into that!
Sorry but I think I won’t implement rotation (at least not now) as it would require too many changes…
Thanks for the feedbacks!
Yep. I know. Big job ;) But I’m allowed to dream!
Once I’ve got a shrunken version, I can always use the XP/Vista image rotation tool. It effects quality, but I’m only using it to send small email images anyway.
Thanks again for such a great application.
Upscaling fixed!
Simple and useful app … it would be more useful if i could choose the file renaming string myself. Personally I need ‘_th’ added to the thumbnail.
For this kind of options I would suggest Ant Renamer!
A fantastic and very useful application. Thanks for sharing this – it’s saved me no end of time already, being able to drag and drop and leave Shrink-o-matic to do the rest. Batch shrinking AND format changing all in one! Fantastic. Thank you very, very much.
Love it!
Thanks! Your application helped me much yesterday
I love the update! It’s very nice that the upscaling bug I mentioned before is fixed and also that the size limitation has been removed. However, now that the size limitation is gone, how come the maximum width and maximum height are still only able to go up to 2880?
If anybody is looking for a tutorial video to give to people who don’t know much about computers, here’s one I made:
http://www.vimeo.com/5547499
Hey WK, great job,
Im starting a new project and this tool its incredible usefull, do you freelance? I really need an app like this for this project, please contact me if you can help me, just say how much it will cost me, if i need my domain logo on the app and if it can upload the pic to my server after resize.
Hope hear from you soon.
Just sent you an e-mail!
@Adam: the 2880px limitation is a technical one so I’m afraid I won’t be able to fix it!
Hello. This is a great tool, thank you!.
Does the EXIF remains after the process by Shrink’o'Matic ?
No, a new file is created from scratch and nothing is injected, so EXIF data is lost…
Great app luv it.. for some odd reason ( I’m on mac leopard) and your window won’t close out the about section that I never opened, program still works but once I updated to the new version this started to show up, any ideas ? works good just wierd.
Thanx !
screen shot.. btw
Weird, indeed!
Never saw this… What’s your version of AIR?
Did you try to uninstall and to re-install the app?
Hey, yup I just did again.. still shows and I’m on a new imac now.. strange indeed.. also it resets all the auto sizing etc when I quit the program, so I keep it running fulltime.. crazy.. should I go in and delete the preferences file maybe ? if so what file etc ? then I’ll reinstall it all again…
Thanx agian !
Rene
Damn this…
If you want to try and delete the config files they are (on a Mac) there: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR/ELS/
I hope this helps.
I really can’t understand why you have this issue…
Hi that worked perfectly, Thanx you !!! Once last thing, I notice that when I shrink picts it rotates the vert to horizantal so then I have to open in mac preview and turn back, do you have a suggestion or maybe an update for this soon ? thanx again. Rene
Great piece of software! Thanks for saving me from teaching Photoshop to my wife!
One question- It doesn’t seem to save my output folder. It saves my dimensions and output format fine, but when I change the output folder to Desktop (for example), when I reopen the program it defaults back to My Documents (Windows XP and Vista). Is there something I am not doing properly?
The output folder should be stored… Looks like a bug.
I will try to fix that!
Thanks for your feedback.
Fixed!
Wow- I even earned a spot on the version history :). Thank you so much – it works great!!
Really love this! But really, really with the EXIF data wasn’t stripped.
;)
I tried your tool and the problem that i found was that it is not able to resize animated gifs. The new gif is only a still picture if i resize it.
Will you fix this our do you know an other tool for resizing animated gifs?
I’m aware of this issue…
Don’t really know how to fix this or any other tool that could help you, sorry. Except Photoshop!
Love the program but would like to have one thing added. The ability to drop .jpeg files into the program and not have to rename them to .jpg before. It just doesn’t like that 4 letter extension I guess!
Hi!
What is the size limit of a image to drop?
I tried with a .png on 30 MB but it just says “go”. Have waited for a 15 minutes and still no output.
Do you need a java(or similar) encoder to output larger files?
//Johan
One more thing,
It would be awsome if you could drag and drop a webimage directly on Shrink-o-matic.
For example http://toki-woki.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/shrink.jpg Drag it to Shrink-o-Matic and it encode the image, output on your desktop!
THAT would save time! Is it possible? ;)
//Johan
@Marc: This bug should be fixed in the next release, thanks for posting it!
@Johan: Theorically there should not be any limits, but of course it could be long or even crash if your computer lacks resources… I think you found your own setup limits with SO’M!
Your idea of drag/dropping images from the browser is cool but I think I remember trying to implement it back in the days and realized that it didn’t work consistently across all browser so I decided not to add it… I’ll have a new look into this for the next update!
@Marc+@Johan: You guys will love the update I just uploaded… Well, I hope so!
Awesome, thanks Quentin!
it’s nice but i want to take 500 x 375 pics and do x 375 why? :S
Very sweet tool and efficient time saver. Shrink has an intuitive user interface and the drag and drop is awesome. I saw it referenced on LinkedIn and have been promoting it myself.
Noise on the Line!
Thanks for app. I was using ACDSee for ages for batch resizing. Now Shrink O’ Matic is my favourite. Saved the day ;)
I love the tool!
The only ‘option’ I miss (to ditch Photoshop for easy resizing etc) is a de-interlace option.
I work a lot with video, which leaves me with interlaced jpg-files.
Hello,
For some reason, the drag and drop ability in Shrink O’Matic has disappeared. I am running the most recent version of SOM, v0.2.5, the current version of the AIR runtime, and Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Has Snow Leopard broken this function? I use SOM all the time, and I’m pretty bummed out that this is broken.
I will investigate on that and keep you informed…
Thanks for sending this.
A question, however: what kind of files were you trying to drop?
Quentin,
I was dropping 4288 × 2848 3.8MB jpeg’s. I’ve shrunk them before, that’s why I’m puzzled. I’ve dropped some other sizes and, SOM won’t even accept those.
OK, I can’t test it myself but I will ask friends and see if I can debug that…
Man, you’re absolutely right…
I don’t know if I can fix that but I will try to hunt that bug down!
Happily you still can use the Browse button.
I had shrink-o-matic installed on my Mac and LOVED it.
Then I went for the upgrade and now it does not work. Pictures bounced right back.
Found a comment you made to someone else with a link to download the latest.
Now my photos go in, GO appears, nothing happens.
I would like my original app back.
Thanks
Sorry about that but don’t worry, every version is still available at the project’s page…
I have no Mac so this is hard for me to debug, folks!
Awesome app! One thing I would love to see though is a counter telling you how many files are being shrunk and how many are still left to go!
Great work man!
Sounds like a good idea, I will try to implement it in the next version!
Just to note that I too had the OSX drag and drop issue running the same setup as @Strubbles. Downgraded to 0.2.4 and it’s working again. Thanks for a really handy app, hope you figure out the issue!
OK, so if 0.2.4 works correctly I guess this is the experimental feature introduced with 0.2.5 that wreaked havoc…
I’ve asked the question on the LiveDocs (thinking this could be a Snow Leopard+AIR bug) but will try to disable that “browser drag’n drop” thing on Macs, to see if it helps!
I’ll keep you guys informed, thanks for the feedback.
Hey Quentin!
Noticed that the image counter has been added in the new version (v0.2.6). Awesome! :)
Absolutely!
You even get some link love in the Version History on the project’s page… Thanks for submitting the idea!
Hi Quentin,
Well done with this tool, it does the job easily, great user interface and funky design! As a previous poster said, this is great for website design clients who want to update their own website without shelling out for a photoshop licence. Nice and simple, add a crop feature and thats all thats needed to optimize jpgs. I have recommended shrink-o-matic on my website design blog at http://www.clickwebdesign.com.au/website-design-blog/optimize-images-for-fast-downloads.html
The only thing missing in this program is the ability to add watermarks.
Got me some link lovin’…yeah! :)
This is super handy. Any way to implement some manual renaming functionality? For instance, I might want the small versions of all images named IMG_0000.JPG to be sIMG_0000.JPG. Maybe if we could just do a manual filename model in a file like s$origname$.JPG or something more elegant. :) Macros would be nice too because when I want to put a set of photos up manually I usually want two versions, the small version is constrained to a width of 442 and the large version is constrained to a width of 1024×1024. So, if I could dump my photos in and get those two versions named s$origname$.JPG and l$origname$.JPG, that would be prime!
All the same, even if these features never make it in, I’ll still be using it! Thanks for the efforts.
Quentin,
Nice job….exactly what a lot of our clients need. We’d like to include a link from our site to your download, or possibly include the link in our app. Shoot me an email so we can do this right.
Wayne
Amazing!!! Thank you for the sharing.
This app has saved my life a bunch of times now – Clients love it.
Great tool for fast image resizing. The only thing that stops me using it all the time is that it doesn’t copy EXIF data. If it did that, it’d be almost perfect. :)
