1) it is not all­ways desir­able to have image enlarged to tar­get size, some­times you just need to make very big just smaller.

2) CMYK JPEG is not con­verted correctly

It would be great if these issues were fixed in future releases.

Is there a limit to the orig­i­nal image size? Works fine on a 2048x1536 jpeg but does noth­ing to a 3264x2448 jpeg

Hi, I installed Adobe AIR and then a few apps includ­ing this one and I can not get it to work at all.
I am on a MAC using leop­ard and nei­ther drag and drop or by using the browse func­tions do any­thing at all?

yes, I have 1.0.1 installed.
I have tried a few apps includ­ing Agile Agenda, Ebay Desk­top, Prac­ti­cal Desk­tiop and they all work fine.

Hi, I trie to install shrink-o-matic in linux (air beta release). The inclu­sion of an ’ in the path _really_ messes the instal­la­tion up. If you really want your app to be “write once run eny­whare” you might want to remove the ’ from the name.

yes, I can save, close and open files with appli­ca­tions that let me do that.
could it be a leop­ard issue??

The appli­ca­tion get installed to /opt/ so if there is an apos­tro­phe in app­name you get one in the path and there is no way to chose a dif­fer­ent instal­la­tion direc­tory. To cleanly remove shrink-o-matic I had to change the name every­where in the con­fig scripts and in sym­link “/opt/Shrink-O-Matic” to “opt/Shrink O’Matic”. So yes, I guess that chang­ing the name should work.

Ran this once and it worked great on a hand­ful of pics. Then I tried it on a sec­ond batch and it won’t allow me to drop the files in the win­dow. Even brows­ing doesn’t work. I tried clos­ing it and re-opening, hop­ing it go back to nor­mal, but no luck.

Your pro­gram works and looks great, but the prob­lem is that I can’t unin­stall it on ubuntu.
Not that I want to get rid of it, but it gives me the install error every time when I try to install or remove a pack­age, and it’s pretty annoying.

The error I’m get­ting when remov­ing it with synap­tic is:

Hi, just to let you know when file exten­sions are in upper­case (like in light­box work­flow) then you can’t use this program

Sup­port for Bitmap files would be really use­ful — quite a lot of my games still use Bitmap as their screen­shot for­mat, and I was want­ing to use SOM to auto­mat­i­cally con­vert them to JPEGs for upload­ing to Photobucket.

Really love the tool but need it to be able to han­dle larger image sizes. I am using a dSLR that takes pic­tures with images sizes of 3872 x 2592. If you could make it han­dle that then it would be an invalu­able tool to my daily workflow.

I posted here before about a prob­lem I had with unin­stalling shrinko­matic in ubuntu, and you told me that I should con­tact adobe to report the bug.

How­ever, I found some­thing that might be your code, although I’m not sure about it, because I don’t know much about it.

The more refined error mes­sage I’m get­ting is:

It seems that on line 42 of postinst, there’s some­thing wrong with the quotes, but since I don’t know much about pro­gram­ming, I wouldn’t know what.

Hai! I love this app and use it alot on my work on my win­dows xp machine. How­ever at home I run Vista and have had it freeze up on my 100% of the time.
Drag­ging images does noth­ing (they wont be rec­og­nized or acknowl­edged) and using the ‘browse’ but­ton will add them how­ever it will freeze up at the ‘Go’ sequence.
Please help.

Excel­lent app … the only change I would request is to bump up the size limit if that is ever pos­si­ble. Irre­gard­less, it is a great design, and it’s the first app I’ve come across that I can uni­ver­sally get my clients to under­stand and use when resiz­ing images to upload to their websites.

“Web ready” is the final step in get­ting an image ready for inclu­sion in a web site or being posted on the web. It “dumbs down” the pic­ture to a smaller file size (usu­ally in the 15-50K range) so it will load quickly with web pages. Pho­to­shop will do this for you either through a menu com­mand (save for the web) or through hot keys (ctrl+alt+shift+S) and give you options for how good or bad you want the qual­ity to be. I usu­ally find that 30% works well and the file size is small enough that it loads quickly.

Well, silly me. Never even saw the JPG qual­ity set­ting. I’ve been using the “same as orig­i­nal” set­ting. I just tried it and it’s PERFECT!! Also picked up the new update. Thanks for open­ing my eyes. :)

Can you get around the cur­rent max res­o­lu­tions? Pic­tures from my Canon 20D don’t shrink. It just says “Go!” with no output.

I’m an employee at a fairly-large news­pa­per, and I’ve installed Shrink-O-Matic on our edi­tors’ machines. It’s a great way for them to eas­ily resize an image when they post the sto­ries on our web­site. How­ever, we’d love to see a fea­ture that would allow you to spec­ify the res­o­lu­tion of the images. Right off the cam­era, they’re around 200 dpi. It’d be great if Shrink-o-Matic had an option to save as 72 dpi (stan­dard web res­o­lu­tion). Would this be pos­si­ble for a future update?

I’m really impressed with your app! I would like to know how you man­aged to get such good qual­ity reduc­tions? When I try resiz­ing an image from 2800x2800 to 400x400 using AS3 the lines appear jagged, how­ever with your appli­ca­tion they are nice, smooth and anti-aliased! Very impres­sive!
Can you pro­vide some help? Or just point me in the right direc­tion for cre­at­ing anti-aliased images?

Hi, great app! I found this one inter­rest­ing because at work we’ve tried some­thing sim­i­lar. Do you think it’s pos­si­ble to drag files straight out of a browser­win­dow into an Air app? I can’t get it to work, and my best guess is it’s not sup­ported due to safety issues. Any thoughts on this one?

mmm but I can drag image files into a swf file and let it read it’s con­tent. So I thought it was not just sup­ported by Air. There must be some way to do it. For me, first drag­ging to desk­top is not an option, it kills the con­cept of my pro­gram ;-) Thanks for your reply.

Shrink-o-Matic is great. Thank you! One prob­lem. Some­times it just stops work­ing. Drop an image and it just says “Go!” with no file name info dis­played. Close/re-open app does not do any­thing. Reboot­ing fixes prob­lem. Is it just me?

Images are 6MP 3466x2304. Reboot­ing does fix prob­lem. Just seems after I open/use/close the pro­gram a few times, it stops working.

Are there plans to ever increase the dimen­sion thresh­old? This would be an extremely use­ful app for what I do, but I deal with orig­i­nal pho­tos at over 3000 px wide, but need to be able to quickly thumb­nail them. This is an awe­some app if it could han­dle the larger sizes. I tried sev­eral of our large images, but it didn’t work on any of them.

Doesn´t work… when I drop an image it just says “Go!”, noth­ing more happens.

Guess it´s due to the size lim­its, maybe you should men­tion that lim­i­ta­tion some­where on the page where you down­load the app. So oth­ers like me won´t waste their time…

I tried to shrink some image files and most worked but some failed.

I found the image files that failed came from the fol­low­ing 2 dig­i­tal cam­eras: Pen­tax *ist DL and Casio EX-S880.

Do you know why the pro­gram can not process the images from these two dig­i­tal cameras??

I read some of the tech reports from above link “techy stuff here” but it was talk­ing about the dif­fer­ence between Flash 8/9 and Flash 10. I do have Flash 10 and it still has the lim­i­ta­tion. There­fore, I hope AIR 1.5 will help this lim­i­ta­tion problem.

What an aswe­some ap!! Thank you! No doubt I will send over a dona­tion. I have a sug­ges­tion and a minor bug report: First the bug, I was test­ing the ap and found that after I shrunk an image to a jpg out­put direc­tory and sub­se­quently deleted the out­put image to try again… I get the go! error on the sec­ond try even though win­dows reported the des­ti­na­tion direc­tory to be empty. Clos­ing the ap and reopen­ing clears what ever is block­ing the sec­ond attempt and the error. Im using Vista 64. Now the sug­gested fea­ture, not sure how hard this would be to code… for jpg out­put give the user an option to shrink file below nnnn size and have the ap adjust the jpg qual­ity to try to meet that criteria.

This has been a very impor­tant time sav­ing ap for me, thank you again!

Hi — really cool piece of soft­ware. I have a enhance­ment sug­ges­tion for the out­put folder fea­ture: would it be fea­si­ble to include an ftp client/function to upload the shrunk images to a web server?

It’d be nice if you could add some rename func­tion­al­ity. Like add _thumb (or what­ever we choose) to the orig­i­nal name. Or pos­si­bly rename the whole thing based on the count.

Great app! How­ever, it would be nice to have the option to only shrink images, only enlarge images, or shrink/enlarge images.

Would it be pos­si­ble to have an option for select­ing PNG8/PNG32 (sim­i­lar to the qual­ity slider for JPG, but just two sim­ple radio but­tons). I don’t mind which one is the default (prob­a­bly PNG32 for most folks), but sav­ing files in the max­i­mum set­tings for PNG8 (256 col­ors, alpha transparancy) is still a huge file size dif­fer­ence com­pared to PNG32, espe­cially for sim­ple web images.

Love your tool. I’m plan­ning to get my wife up to speed with it so she can eas­ily resize dig­i­tal pho­tos for email­ing. Actu­ally, I have lots of non-techno-savvy rel­a­tives who NEED to install this pro­gram! A cou­ple of things I don’t think have been men­tioned yet…

1. Upscal­ing: I have found that small images will be upscaled. Not sure if this is inten­tional, but I’d like an option to turn this off (and just copy the orig­i­nal to the out-folder — perhaps).

2. Rota­tion: I know there’s no image pre­view. But it would be really cool if this was enabled (or an option) so that each image could be pre­viewed before pro­cess­ing. Why? So you can enable a rotate option of course! A “90 degree CW” but­ton and a “Go” but­ton would suf­fice. If you dropped a whole swag of images on, maybe they could just dis­play one at a time. “Go” (or Enter key) to process with­out rota­tion. Again, check­ing a “review each image” box in your set­tings could enable or dis­able this man­ual pro­cess­ing option.

Once I’ve got a shrunken ver­sion, I can always use the XP/Vista image rota­tion tool. It effects qual­ity, but I’m only using it to send small email images any­way.

Sim­ple and use­ful app … it would be more use­ful if i could choose the file renam­ing string myself. Per­son­ally I need ‘_th’ added to the thumbnail.

I love the update! It’s very nice that the upscal­ing bug I men­tioned before is fixed and also that the size lim­i­ta­tion has been removed. How­ever, now that the size lim­i­ta­tion is gone, how come the max­i­mum width and max­i­mum height are still only able to go up to 2880?

Hey, yup I just did again.. still shows and I’m on a new imac now.. strange indeed.. also it resets all the auto siz­ing etc when I quit the pro­gram, so I keep it run­ning full­time.. crazy.. should I go in and delete the pref­er­ences file maybe ? if so what file etc ? then I’ll rein­stall it all again…

One ques­tion– It doesn’t seem to save my out­put folder. It saves my dimen­sions and out­put for­mat fine, but when I change the out­put folder to Desk­top (for exam­ple), when I reopen the pro­gram it defaults back to My Doc­u­ments (Win­dows XP and Vista). Is there some­thing I am not doing properly?

I tried your tool and the prob­lem that i found was that it is not able to resize ani­mated gifs. The new gif is only a still pic­ture if i resize it.
Will you fix this our do you know an other tool for resiz­ing ani­mated gifs?

Love the pro­gram but would like to have one thing added. The abil­ity to drop .jpeg files into the pro­gram and not have to rename them to .jpg before. It just doesn’t like that 4 let­ter exten­sion I guess!

What is the size limit of a image to drop?
I tried with a .png on 30 MB but it just says “go”. Have waited for a 15 min­utes and still no output.

Do you need a java(or sim­i­lar) encoder to out­put larger files?

Very sweet tool and effi­cient time saver. Shrink has an intu­itive user inter­face and the drag and drop is awe­some. I saw it ref­er­enced on LinkedIn and have been pro­mot­ing it myself.

I work a lot with video, which leaves me with inter­laced jpg-files.

For some rea­son, the drag and drop abil­ity in Shrink O’Matic has dis­ap­peared. I am run­ning the most recent ver­sion of SOM, v0.2.5, the cur­rent ver­sion of the AIR run­time, and Snow Leop­ard 10.6.2. Has Snow Leop­ard bro­ken this func­tion? I use SOM all the time, and I’m pretty bummed out that this is broken.

I was drop­ping 4288 × 2848 3.8MB jpeg’s. I’ve shrunk them before, that’s why I’m puz­zled. I’ve dropped some other sizes and, SOM won’t even accept those.

I had shrink-o-matic installed on my Mac and LOVED it.
Then I went for the upgrade and now it does not work. Pic­tures bounced right back.
Found a com­ment you made to some­one else with a link to down­load the lat­est.
Now my pho­tos go in, GO appears, noth­ing hap­pens.
I would like my orig­i­nal app back.

As a pre­vi­ous poster said, this is great for web­site design clients who want to update their own web­site with­out shelling out for a pho­to­shop licence. Nice and sim­ple, add a crop fea­ture and thats all thats needed to opti­mize jpgs. This is super handy. Any way to imple­ment some man­ual renam­ing func­tion­al­ity? For instance, I might want the small ver­sions of all images named IMG_0000.JPG to be sIMG_0000.JPG. Maybe if we could just do a man­ual file­name model in a file like s$origname$.JPG or some­thing more ele­gant. :) Macros would be nice too because when I want to put a set of pho­tos up man­u­ally I usu­ally want two ver­sions, the small ver­sion is con­strained to a width of 442 and the large ver­sion is con­strained to a width of 1024x1024. So, if I could dump my pho­tos in and get those two ver­sions named s$origname$.JPG and l$origname$.JPG, that would be prime!

All the same, even if these fea­tures never make it in, I’ll still be using it! Thanks for the efforts.

Great tool for fast image resiz­ing. The only thing that stops me using it all the time is that it doesn’t copy EXIF data. If it did that, it’d be almost perfect. :)

Great pro­gram thanks! Alot of mon­i­tors and most TV’s are now wide screen I can not seem to get SOM to out­put a wide screen res?

Not sure how to send a sam­ple from the blog but widescreen is 16:9 I set SOM to 1024x640 whick is 16:9 and the pro­gram then makes it 853x640 which is 4:3 and any other 16:9 res I use gets changed also hope this helps

I get the sim­i­lar result that Crash does.. I set it at 1024x640 and I get a 960x640 output..

I’m guess­ing the widescreen image isn’t really that wide. Anamor­phic issues, strethed pixel widths to blame. Check the “Pixel Aspect Ratio” of the orig­i­nal image in Pho­to­shop. It will likely not be 1:1. More likely 1:1.46 or some­thing. So your orig­i­nal is 4:3, dis­play­ing stratched for widescreen as per the ratio… My guess anyway.

How can I rename images with dif­fer­ent names?

I use this ALL the time. When Google added page load time as part of their search algo­rithm, I had some­one sug­gest that I should re-size my pic­tures before upload­ing them to my blog, rather than using the plu­gin re-sizing tool. They were right…my pages load faster and you’ve made it easy!

Hey Quentin, I’ve been using your app for a while now and today I noticed that you can’t queue files from dif­fer­ent batches.

For exam­ple, I selected a few files to process and then went into a sub-folder folder to select more files and dragged them into the app but the con­ver­sion process then stops the first con­ver­sion and starts the sec­ond.
How about adding a queue so you can keep adding files and it will process them in order. Both sets of files were also being sent to the same out­put folder.

This app looks great! Easy enough for my extended fam­ily to use, and have them stop com­ing to me every­time some­thing needs to be resized.

I do have a ques­tion though, is there an option to resize the image into a spe­cific file size while keep­ing the aspect ratio? For exam­ple, I’d like to resize some­thing 1000x1000 to 640x480 with 1:1 aspect ratio and insert­ing borders.

It would be nice if you could spec­ify the out­put exten­sion (or pre­fix) — some­times I just want to add “-small” to a file­name, not the width.
