Available on Adobe AIR Marketplace, nice!
Update!
1.0.2 available.
The export is working fine now, but there still is the “catupre only a selection” !
Damn!
I thought I fixed it!
Featured on Mashable US!
Ouch!
Super ce p’tit truc. Et une interface que même les vieux digital immigrant de 38 ans peuvent comprendre.
J’adopte. ça peut être cool pour faire des vignettes en 2 temps 3 mouvements !
Featured as a staff pick on the home of the Marketplace, yeppah!
Why isn’t there a valid download link? For some reason your embed code isn’t working properly on FF with OS X. I can’t seem to grab the file for the life of me. Why not just link to the install file so I can install it if I already have Air installed?
Well… You can!
Simply click on the version number (on the project page) to get it…
Absolutely awesome! Thanks for the quick reply. I didn’t realize the version history had links to the version. Perhaps you may want to consider making the “Install (v. 1.0.2)” section a link to the most recent version as well?
Thanks again!
Done!
I’ll try to fix the OSX issue…
wanted to try it out, but firstly, you should provide the zip with a content-disposition: attachment, so that safari downloads it automatically and secondly the .air is simply a folder, not a package, which cannot be simply double-clicked to install the app.
would be cool if you fixed it.
Well, there’s no ZIP, the page links to .air files…
I’ve changed the Apache type handler, it should work better now.
Ah! Strange that it unzipped a non-zip file.
Works better now, you should still use content-disposition, so I don’t have to alt-click, tho.
Oh, and thanks! You’re quick (because you’re in my timezone unlike most other web devs ^^)
Very nice, very useful! Thanks for sharing your work!
Are you aware of a way to make it convenient to export the current page from Firefox or IE? Maybe an extension providing a button or a right-click menu item?
Thx, again! Nifty tool!
Nope, no clue. And that’s part of the reason why I did WebKut!
My company almost fell in love with this AIR app. They needed a way to put flash graphs into a power point presentation….that is until it couldn’t copy the graphs. And just like that they fell out of love.
Maybe when it can do that, we will talk again.
Hi and thanks for feedback!
In fact, some Flash animations work but, as you noticed, some don’t. I’d love to have them work but after some research I couldn’t find any way to do it…
Anyways, if I succeed I’d submit an update and anyone using 1.0.2 would be notified.
Let’s hope this happens!
New update available (1.0.3).
See project’s page for details!
Nice appli! works great on OS X. But you setup a default directory that doesn’t exist on OS X preventing us to open the capture when it’s done.
Really?
Should be the desktop!
The pathname is correct in the dialog box /Users//Desktop/out-1.jpg
but when I say I want to open it, Firefox try to open this URL:
file:///Applications/WebKut.app/Contents/Resources/Users//Desktop/out-1.jpg
some words are missing in my previous comment… here’s the good one ;)
The pathname is correct in the dialog box
/Users/username/Desktop/out-1.jpg
but when I say I want to open it, Firefox try to open this URL:
file:///Applications/WebKut.app/Contents/Resources/Users/username/Desktop/out-1.jpg
OK!
I’ll have a look into this!
Yo – any eta on supporting flash? I loved this app until i saw that problem.
ETA: Estimated time of arrival?
Absolutely not! Not even sure if this’ll be technically possible one day…
Updated to 1.0.4!
The Softpedia Editorial Team sent me this, nice I guess.
Updated to 1.1!
Big updates, mainly GIF export and on-the-fly renaming.
More at the project’s page…
Hello,
I am from Holland, in Dutch the word Kut means cunt. We see it more often that people in English substitute the C for a K. Cool for example becomes Kool, which means cabbage. The kool example however is a funny one. Kut is a bit more serious.
Just so you know.
Greetz Erik
Yes, I’ve learnt it recently…
Thanks for sharing!
Update!
1.2 available > bêta flickr upload and more!
Warning, special characters might be buggy when posting to flickr…
Bug fixes and small enhancements: WK1.2.1!
Your name of the app is very funny translated to dutch ;) kut = c_unt
Hi. This is a great App. I have only one suggestion. When you use Acrobat Professional you can create pdf’s out of websites and have it download the whole site, main page, or as many “level’s” deap as you want. I think this would be a great addition.
Thank you very much for this great app.
I have one big trouble with your application:
when i go to the download page, i see that there isn’t Adobe Air for my platform
but it’s not true! I’ve installed alpha for linux today!
Maybe every user could download it?
great app. the name is a bit unfortunate..
‘Kut’ is a word for the female reproductive organ, in Dutch..
so you do the math: web-’…’ :)
@alex: I probably won’t add this functionality, sorry…
@QZip: You can get the .air files from the project’s page. Just click on the version numbers! I hope this helps…
@W: Yep, I already read that here, but that’s OK with me!
Good job, it is really nice, i really liked it.
Thanks
Salut,
Can you provide the option to upload to a Flickr set? I would like to put all such shots automatically in a Screenshots set.
Do you mean to a specific set?
Love the name: Kut is Dutch for cunt ;-)
Thanks for this app! It comes in very handy when one needs webpages offline… come to think of it… how did we survive without it???
Been fiddling with the apps. I love it, but why is there a limit on the file size? I mean, some text pages can run for very long and I’d still have to take 2 shots to be able to capture it for offline use.
For the rest I don’t see anything I could comment on as it all works fine for me! Thx!
The reason is technical so I can’t bypass these limitations, sorry.
Do you plan to open source this?
Nope, I didn’t plan this…
In what part would you be interested?
I’d also be interested in an open source version, not parts though, mainly because I’d want to expand the feature set to include things like:
* navigability with mouse buttons (back + forward),
* a capture hotkey (to allow capturing pages with any hover effects intact) and
* bulk capture (pass a bunch of urls, spit out a bunch of captures).
But you could feel free to implement the ideas yourself. ;)
Regarding lengthy pages, what if you automatically scrolled the window, took multiple screenshots, then seamed them together afterwords? Would that help overcome the limitations? AIR has some lame limitations though, such as the inability to even open a folder! So tragic, they are… unfortunately.
Those ideas are good ones!
Unfortunately I don’t plan any opensourcing anytime soon…
The “automatic scroll” solution is what I used to do in the early versions but I soon realised that it’s quite slow, it add glitches to pages with static backgrounds and you can’t instantiate a big enough Bitmap for screen caps bigger than the limitations… So I quickly looked for another way of doing this!
I’ll keep you informed if I change my mind on this opensource switch…
Hi Quentin,
App looks great. Do you think it is at all possible to fix the capture of Flash components on the page?
gr,
martijn
Nope, that’s a technical issue…
Great App.
One minor issue for me.
Antialiasing.
I know that Flash 9+ has advanced antialiasing options. You can be quite refined with your setting to increase “perceived” smoothness. The most advanced setting introduces colour to help soften text. This seems to be the rendering setting choice of this app and the resulting image looks nice. But I want my screenshot to look like a common, everyday, crappy, XP Firefox/IE screenshot, which doesn’t anti-alias text under font-size:16px.
An option to toggle antialiasing (none/monotone/best) would be MUCH appreciated.
It might be really hard… which is why it isn’t there already. But my rainbow-text-screenshots aren’t a very good representation of how the final HTML website looks. It would be great if this option made it into a furute update!
Cheers,
NacaYoda.
Unfortunately AIR’s WebKit (the HTML render engine) doesn’t allow toggling of the anti-aliasing so I’m afraid what you’re asking for is impossible.
Are you on Windows? If so, what happens if you disable anti-aliasing for the whole system?
Nah, turning of AA on the system (XP) doesn’t help either.
It’s a shame it can’t be toggled. This actually restricts my ability to really use WebKut as I’d like to. So different is a screenshot from it compared to a real HTML browser. It’s a pity because in every other way it is so good.
Keep your ears open, maybe Adobe will release an update that will allow this one day…
Cheers,
NacaYoda
cool application many thanks use it all the time
I love you apps! I wish I could use webkut with local files but it has to be http
I’ll try to fix that in the next update!
This application does exactly what i want it to do, except I need it for the browser(of the users choice), trying to implement a flex/flash application which does that same thing but as a type of tool on an html site or flex/flash application in a browser, to allow customized snapshots of data on the page to build a pdf report in realtime for a user, and without the scrolling technique, if youd be interested in talking with me about it, please shoot me an email :-)
Hey Quentin,
You know I mentioned open sourcing before, for a number of reasons, and you said you weren’t interested in doing that, I was hoping to at least see you incorporate the features I mentioned. So how about it? :)
* navigability with mouse buttons (back + forward),
* a capture hotkey (to allow capturing pages with any mouse hover effects intact) and
* bulk capture (pass a bunch of urls, spit out a bunch of captures).
Please consider implementing these ideas into the next major version, say 1.5? ;)
* filename customization options, such as url-based (www-domain-com-path-to-page.jpg) or title-based (Title of the Page.jpg) or even a mixture of the two, perhaps.
Add that one to my list. I’ve got other ideas floating around as well, somewhere. :)
Hi Scott!
I’m happy you come up with fresh ideas and ways to improve WebKut but unfortunately I don’t have too much free time these days and if those features make it to WebKut one day, this is sadly not going to happen soon…
Now, about open-sourcing. I’m sorry I can’t really do that as I sometimes have contracts with companies that want a customized version of the app, and only a “copyrighted” version of WebKut allows this. I hope you guys’ll understand!
Nice app
Quick question. Do you use JPEGencoder ou JPEGAsyncEncoder?
Can you tell more about it? :)
Thanks
I don’t have access to the sources right now but I’m pretty sure I used JPEGEncoder!
Cool
Thanks
Seems faster with just the JPEGEncoder (corelib).
Thought that you used some JpegAsyncEncoder.
Thanks
Do those people who came up with this name actually know what “Kut” means in Dutch? ha!ha!ha!ha!
Yes I know what it means, you’re not the first Dutch guy to react!
But I kept the name, heh!
I love this application!!I just wished it was able to capture flash elements on my PC (running Windows). Can the next version include this functionality for us Window users? Or do i have to buy a MAC? lol :P
It works the same on PC and Mac, the limitation is a technical one and also exists on Mac…
Unfortunately it’s not possible to fix it.
I love you apps! I wish I could use webkut with local files but it has to be http

I think you can implement this feature if you can handle IIS from Adobe AIR. Once configured, we can refer local files with http protocol.
http://localhost/dcolon/m.html
refers to m.html file on my d drive as I assigned dcolon name to d drive in IIS.
And another thing, I liked the application. This is the first AIR application I am using and it is really very good.
Can I get answer to some of my question? I am thinking to write a post about Webkut on my blog.
1) What is TOKI WOKI?
2)What is the date when current version of application released?
3)Why you named it Webkut though you were aware of Dutch meaning?
I think with this information, information about Webkut will be complete from user point of view.
Here is my post about Webkut
http://compupodia.blogspot.com/2009/11/excellent-webpage-snapshot-tool-webkut.html
Thanks for your quick reply. I updated the post. :)
This is a great tool but where it’s let down is it’s lack of Support for Flash. I would be willing to take a look into the code and finding a solution for this on Windows, but only if there are sources available. I can understand if you dont want to release them to the public just yet, but even if you were to share them with a small group of developers you may find bugs like this getting fixed faster :)
Unfortunately this is a technical limitation that can’t be fixed (on our side, but Adobe could probably)…
But if you really want to try, you can without having this app’s sources!
I like this application!!I just wished it was able to capture flash elements on my PC (running Windows)

I love this app! I’m going to write a blog post about it under my usefull free software I can’t live without section!
To bad about flash, but I love it anyway (I try to avoid using flash)
Got a question: On Windows7 and Vista, all gifs have verticle lines in them now since I updated AIR. Both systems, it’s a problem with AIR I’m sure, any fixes coming soon?
@Green CompleX: I tested the app on Vista+AIR 1.5.3 and didn’t notice the problem you mention… Could you specify the URL you were trying to capture?
http://www.kill4play.com
Still Does it…
Hum… I tried and can’t reproduce the bug.
Do you use a special ratio?
Hmm, I have three different PCs all Windows7
Oh I’m sorry
http://www.kill4play.com/forum/index.php?board=1.0
You have to be looking at a profile pic…
And I have It set to png full page, but all settings do it… the Avatars look like bar codes, and it happens on a few sites…
Here is my Screenshot I just uploaded http://kill4play.com/kill4play.com.png
I still Love the app though!
OK, I see…
So I guess I can’t do anything about it, but we can wait for AIR 2.0 that might fix it since it uses a newer WebKit version!
Sweet! So you saw that too eh?
Any chance for flash support along with the new webkit?
I mean, it is adobe….
Yep, I saw it!
About that Flash limitation: I’m pretty sure it won’t work, even with AIR 2.0, it seems to be something hard to handle by Adobe.
LOL That’s funny, Adobe Air can’t handle rendering flash… Hmmm maybe this says something about adobe?
Like mayne you can tell me this, Why can foxit PDF Reader do the exact same thing as Adobe Acrobat Reader, in 3 Mb as opposed to 77Mb?
It even does the form filler and saving like Acrobat Reader…
I do like Adobe tho…
It also has the same effect on my main website: http://green.cx
It’s where I blog about tech, and IT related stuff
Open source would be nice,
id like to change the flickr upload functionality so a remote folder [and the path to a sql database ] and allow to tag photos which would also get sorted in a database.
This app would be brillient for what i need if it acted like Pixus adobe air application.
In that it sits over the top of the screen and allows to you pull the sides to resize. Once you have resized to the shape you want. Click snapshot. This then processes and asks you what you want to do with the image?
a)email
b)post to social networks
c)download
d)upload to ftp? – not sure that this one is that important.
The reason I need it to work like this is because I have a mapping software that only runs through microsoft browser. I can’t add in the URL as it is dynamic and inbuilt into the software.
If you know of any application that already does this or if you could do this, let me know. Cheers
@Adam: The idea is good but I don’t think this would have to be in WebKut… But this could be a new/dedicated app!
I don’t know any AIR app that does this but the Capture Tool on Windows looks like that.
Thanks for the suggestion!
ok thanks, is it possible to just get screen short from copying a url or some how using a shorcut key of some sort, while cropping works best with the application browser, where as having to revisit a website in your app to get the actual screen shot seems like extra work
The Print screen Key in Windows does that, it sores the whole screen as bitmap data in the clipboard.
You can then paste that clipboard data into any application that can handle raw bitmap data
Examples:
Photoshop -> Paste as New Image or Layer
MS Paint -> Paste as New Image
MS Word -> Paste as clipart
MS Outlook -> Paste as Photo Attachment
jason i hope that ridiculous statement wasnt aimed at me 8-)
[...] WebKut – Speaking of screenshots – I love this AIR app for doing screenshots. I’ve also used one called Jing but it crashed a few times and this one is lighter and easier. [...]
I really like this app. However I’ve been having problems using it successfully on my blog recently. everytime I want to upload an image I captured using webkut, I get this error message: “Unable to create directory /home/mionesco/……… Is its parent directory writable by the server?”
Does this problem originate from using Webkut?
Thanks
Michael
Hi,
I believe the errors you have are sent by an FTP program, right? If so, I can’t do anything about it, you should try another one or upload in an other directory to see if it works.
Thx Quentin,
I tried uploading a file not created from webkut and the same error occurred. I’ll check it out with WordPress.org.
Thanks again,
Michael
